The Twin Boroughs Of Ellie And Earlsferry

Favorite Family Holiday Destinations On The Forth In Fife Scotland

Aug 27, 2008 David Smith

These towns are a perfect combination of coast and sea with activities for all members of the family. There is a wide range of holiday homes for rental available.

The tide rolls in across soft golden sand, then just as regularly rolls out again leaving perfect sandcastle building material. The long West Beach which links Ellie and Earlsferry is probably the most popular for families and there beach huts are available to rent. The rocks and headlands between the five beaches provide endless opportunities for rock pool dipping. Crabs, shrimps and sea creatures hide amongst the seaweed. Beachcombing yields beautiful sea glass in all shapes and muted colours. On the Ruby Beach lucky beachcombers will find red garnets hiding in the sand awaiting discovery. No matter what the wind direction beach lovers will be able to find a sheltered beach here.

Ellie and Earlsferry are on the Fife coastal walk, listed as Britain's number one coastal walk by the Guardian newspaper. Walkers can sit by the Lady Tower and look from Chapel Ness at Earlsferry around the coast to St Monans and beyond. Walkers should be aware of the tide however and not attempt the chain walk between Ellie and St Monans at high tide.

Holidays in Elie

Ellie has a wide range of shops for its residents and visitors. There is a baker’s shop, newsagents and grocers, chemist, coffee shops and gift shops and a well-stocked delicatessen. Many of the fine houses overlooking the bay are used as holiday homes with families from across Scotland choosing to spend their summers here. Many are available for rent but those in the best positions naturally are quickly taken.

The harbour at Ellie is owned by a local trust. Work has been undertaken to improve facilities for visitors with picnic areas and a new viewpoint. Now mainly used for pleasure craft, access for launching is over the beach. Ely Watersports Center provides hire and tuition for all manner of water sports during the summer. The sheltered waters of the bay and the shallow beach provide a perfect setting for learning windsurfing, dinghy sailing or sea kayaking. For those who wish to be towed behind a powerboat, both waterskiing and banana rides are available. The local sailing club welcomes visitors on a weekly basis.

The Ship Inn

The Ship Inn overlooks the harbour and is one of those rare public houses which seem to tick all of the boxes. A wonderful location, good beer and wine, sensibly priced quality food and unusually in Scotland an occasional cricket match. Not your normal cricket match on the village green but one played on the hard dry sand below the seating area. Visiting teams from around the UK come to try their luck on the unusual surface providing entertainment for all on Sunday afternoons.
